Question 1(a) (i)
The Secondary School Curriculum for the Visual and Performing Arts instructs that Art History and Appreciation is covered in the first term for third form students. This topic centres on Local artists, Cultural Aspects of Art in the Caribbean and Contemporary Art Movements specifically Cubism, Surrealism and Post Modernism. For this question, I would be focusing on Contemporary Art Movements.
Art History and Appreciation is essential in the visual art discipline since it develops students’ visual cognizance. Edification in this area enhances student’s ability to analyze what they see and offers students the opportunity to reflect on the properties of different art forms and movements through history. Through this reflection and analysis, students can identify and have a greater understanding of the use and presence of elements and principles of art in these art forms.
Question 1(a) (ii)
To be effective, an instructional unit for Art History and Appreciation would require cognitive, affective and psychomotor objectives to ensure that student has the opportunity to fully grasp the concept. For the third form year body, instructional objective goals for this unit would be:-

3. Psychomotor: Produce an artwork reflecting any of these styles mentioned in the second objective.
Objective 1 aims to develop students’ perception of Art Movements and allow them to differentiate between movements and identify the time periods they belong to.
