Question 2(b) (i)
Is
it Valid?
Ensuring the validity of
assessment is important to ensuring it is effective. Steps which can assist
teachers in insuring their assessment is valid are:-
- Make
sure your goals and objectives are clearly defined and operationalized.
Expectations of students should be written down.
- Match
your assessment measure to your goals and objectives. Additionally, have
the test reviewed by faculty at other schools to obtain feedback from an
outside party who is less invested in the instrument.
- Get
students involved; have the students look over the assessment for
troublesome wording, or other difficulties.
- If
possible, compare your measure with other measures, or data that may be
available.
The
sample test included at the beginning of this question’s response can be
considered valid. This test is a summative assessment given at the end of a
school term. It adherers to the criteria needed for it to fulfil the needs of
the different types of validity. The goals and objective of the test are explained
clearly at the beginning of the test and the beginning of each new section. The
content of test focuses on an amalgamation of the lessons taught throughout the
term
Is it Reliable?
“Reliability refers to how consistently a method measures something. If the same result can be consistently achieved by using the same methods under the same circumstances, the measurement is considered reliable” (Middleton, 2019). The proof of this test reliability was provided by students test scores. This test was administered to the 1st form year body which consists of four classes with approximately twenty five students per class. Students generally scored between 60% and 90% when they sat this test which indicates the test reliability.
Question 2(b) (ii)
Suggestions
To
ensure the test validity and reliability, the teacher could:-\
1.
Ensure the wording of questions is
understandable to students at all learning levels.
2.
Incorporate visual aids in questions to
ensure students with reading and understanding challenges can have context for
questions.
3.
Have their test reviewed by their peers
before administration to ensure that all questions are appropriate and
relevant.
4.
Have a second marker to assist in grading
papers to ensure that test results are consistent.
