Question 1(b) (i)
Performance assessment is an assessment that provides valid evidence of student learning by the demonstration or application of knowledge or skill to complete a meaningful task. It is designed to provide a more comprehensive account of students understanding of a concept. The demonstration or application is then assessed through observation and judgement guided by a rubric. Performance assessments are important for both teachers and students. For students, it presents the opportunity for immediate feedback and self-assessment through the rubric. It also develops their critical thinking skill through problem-solving their task, which in turn encourages and enables students to work independently. For teachers, it offers the opportunity to revisit and integrate previous topics in their lessons. It also allows teachers to observe student performance which can indicate effective or ineffective teaching strategies and allow the teacher to tailor their methods to best suit their students.
This Art History and Appreciation Performance Assessment is a summative assessment that requires students to understand and apply their knowledge of art movements while tapping into previous knowledge of other art topics. This assessment requires students to not only demonstrate their knowledge of art movements but also graphic design, colour theory and elements and principles of art. The task was made meaningful by the decision to give students multiple avenues to perform the task is meant to inveigle students into enjoying it. Asking students to stick strictly to either a computer app or manually may unintentionally alienate students. Some may not have access to devices and the internet or the fund to acquire materials to complete the task.
